Welcome to our resources section. Here at the HR Doc Shop™ we understand that although small business owners want to stay on top of employment legislation, for many that is simply an impossible task. It is okay to admit that you don’t know everything, actually we have a saying around here that no day is complete unless you have learnt something new.

It is our mission to remove the fear from the confusing world of HR and we hope that this resources section will help us do that. In this section we provide information that we believe is relevant to small business owners. There is no judgement, no “you should know that” approach. It is simply an area where we can shed light on some areas of managing staff.

We will update this section regularly and if you have already subscribed to our newsletter we will tell you when that happens. If not, then just sign up now and keep informed.

Finally if there is anything you would like us to cover in this section, we would love to hear from you so please email us at careteam@thehrdocshop.com

Thanks for stopping by.

Until the next time,

Founder of the HR Doc Shop™

Employment Status / Categories of Staff (UK)

Did you know that there are different categories of staff when considered under the context of employment legislation in the UK?

Whilst on the surface these categories may seem interchangeable to many employers, it is essential that you understand which categories you employ.

Statutory Employee Rights (UK)

Employees have many “rights” as laid down in legislation but it never ceases to amaze me that many small business owners do not know what those rights are. So to end the truth or myth around employee rights we have provided the current list of statutory employee rights in the UK.

National Minimum Wage

National Minimum Wage (NMW) is a minimum amount per hour that most workers in the UK are entitled to be paid.  NMW is paid at different rates depending on your age and whether you are an apprentice.  NMW rates are normally amended each year in October.  If you are over 25 you will receive the National Living Wage (NLW) and this rate is normally amended in April of each year. We advise that you seek advice on the actual NMW and NLW rates at the time of payment to ensure you have the most up to date information.

Statutory Payments

The rates of Statutory Payments change each year and it is important you know the correct rates and make payments based on the current information.  Entitlement to the statutory payments is dependent on meeting the eligibility criteria for each payment type and you must check these at the time of processing payments.  The following are the current rates in place in Northern Ireland correct as of May 2017*.   NB: We always advise you to check with HMRC for the current rates at the time of payment processing to ensure you are working off the current rates.

Tribunal Compensation Limits

The rates of tribunal compensation limits change each year and it is useful to know the correct rates. As of 14 February 2016 the following are the current limits in place in Northern Ireland:
